Soprano Kyra Folk-Farber and pianist Kinza Tyrrell warmly invite you to share in music by Britten, Berg, Duparc, Rachmaninoff, Rossini, and more on March 21st at 2:30 PM at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver (949 West 49th Avenue). A Vancouver native, Kyra has participated in the “In the House” Performing Arts Festival, at Voxfest Worldbeat at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, in recital with violinist Zena Schiff at the Chutzpah! Festival, and in concert with The Opera Project. She has also sung arias from Handel’s Sing-along-Messiah with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Bruce Pullan at Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre. Kyra’s most recent operatic performances include the roles of La Femme in Poulenc’s one-woman opera La Voix humaine in Montreal and Anne Truelove in The Rake’s Progress in Tel Aviv with Paul Nadler conducting. Kyra has been praised for her “powerful and biting” portrayal of Donna Anna in a performance of Don Giovanni conducted by Jean-François Rivest (Le Devoir). Upcoming performances include a portrayal of Mimì in La Bohème at the Highlands Summer Opera Festival in Haliburton, Ontario under the direction of Richard Margison and Valerie Kuinka. Also comfortable on the concert stage, Kyra has performed excerpts from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under the baton of Maestro Kent Nagano, and has sung excerpts from Lonely Child by Claude Vivier with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra at Wilfrid Pelletier Hall. Kyra received her Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, where she studied with Edward Zambara. In 2009 she received her Doctorate of Music in Vocal Performance from Université de Montréal, where she studied with Rosemarie Landry and Catherine Sévigny. While growing up in Vancouver, Kyra studied with Heidi Klassen, Anna Relyea, and Sylvia Cavanagh. Victoria native Kinza Tyrrell made her orchestral debut at age twelve under the baton of Paul Freeman and the Victoria Symphony. The critics have called her a “sensation” with “awardwinning talent,” pronouncing her playing as “brilliant” with “beautifully limpid tone colours and sparkling passagework” and “skilled artistry.” She began piano lessons at age four, acquired her ARCT at fifteen, and went on to study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Graz Musikhochschule, care of the Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarship, right out of high school. Over the years, she has also had the pleasure of studying with various world-renowned keyboard artists such as Jon Kimura Parker, Anton Kuerti and Gyorgy Sebok. As well as being a solo performer, Kinza is in great demand as a repetiteur, language coach and opera conductor. She won the 2003 Bösendorfer Prize from the Opera Coaching division of the International Belvedere Opera Competition in Vienna and holds a Doctorate of piano and vocal coaching from McGill University. Before accepting the positions of Principle Repetiteur and Music Director of VOIS at Vancouver Opera, she was on the esteemed music faculty at the Canadian Opera Company for three years. This June, she is returning to Europe to teach and mentor young singers and pianists at the COSI opera program in Sulmona, Italy. Additionally, Dr. Tyrrell enjoys collaborating with singers in recital, having worked with well known Canadian artists Isabel Bayrakdarian, Measha Brueggergosman, John Fanning, Daniel Taylor, Benjamin Butterfield, and Marc Hervieux to name a few.
