Pipedream Theatre Project Society Presents A New Brain
June 16 - 21, 2009
Pipedream Theatre Project is proud to present the Western Canadian premiere of the critically acclaimed musical A New Brain! Written by William Finn and James Lapine, A New Brain was first produced at the Lincoln Centre in New York City. A New Brain is loosely autobiographical and deals directly with Finn’s own harrowing personal experience with arteriovenous malformation (a congenital defect of the brain). Finn wrote many of the songs soon after his release from the hospital.
The musical begins with Gordon Schwinn, a young talented songwriter, working at his piano. The lead character is frustrated because he must write a song for a children’s television entertainer. Having no luck, Gordon takes a break to meet his agent Rhoda for lunch. During the meal, Gordon clutches his head in agony and falls face first into his pasta. Gordon is taken to the hospital where it is learned that he has arteriovenous malformation.
At the hospital, Gordon must undergo a dangerous and potentially fatal operation to save his life. Surrounded by his tiny but supportive family, including his mother and lover Roger, Gordon nonetheless must face this crisis alone. Through his struggles, Gordon finds salvation in the healing power of art.
A New Brain is a triumphant, uplifting and exciting new musical that the Pipedream Theatre Project is proud to bring to Vancouver audiences for the first time.
