Barlaam & Josaphat Medieval Wanderings of a Cosmopolitan Legend
Dialogos (Paris): Katarina Livljanic, voice & direction Albrecht Maurer, fiddle & rebec Norbert Rodenkirchen, flutes & harp
Dialogos, one of the most outstanding and original medieval ensembles of the new generation, returns to Vancouver with a programme inspired by one of the most popular medieval legends, the incredible tale of Josaphat and his master Barlaam, originating from 3rd-4th century India. The story is a Christianised version of one of the legends of Buddha, having undergone a transformation as it spread westward from India. In this programme, the performers follow Barlaam and Josaphat on their many wanderings, sharing with the audience a powerful experience in which different languages and musical cultures meet in a surprising soundscape, like an audible Tower of Babel, of early medieval Europe.
This performance is part of a series of three medieval concerts taking place in January 2010; other performances include The Rheingold Curse on January 22 and The Grail, the Knight and the Poet on January 26. Not to be missed! Vancouver is the only North American location where all three performances will be presented.
Co-presented with the UBC School of Music, and generously sponsored by Elaine Adair. A performance with surtitles.
