2013 Chutzpah! presents AMP - Sidra Bell Dance New York + LEVYdance
February 16, 17, 18
Saturday February 16 @ 8:00pm
Sunday February 17 @ 7:00pm
Monday February 18 @ 8:00pm
Provocative New York choreographer Sidra Bell and San Francisco-based Benjamin Levy of LEVYdance share this evening of brainy, exuberant dance, showcasing the unique sensibilities of both East and West Coast experiences. Each company comes with its own distinct personality reflecting the aesthetics and cultures of the companies themselves. Sidra Bell Dance New York presents Nudity, an innovative, provocative and kinetic work that evinces a love affair with formalism, utility, focus, rigor, and regimen. The San Francisco Guardian calls Bell “…a complete creature of the theatre…the ferocious physicality of her dance-making is its most attractive quality.” Her elegant, darkly romantic work turns one’s imagination upside down where form begets deep sensations that resonate and vibrate for the performers and spectator.
Known for its daring, densely layered, kinaesthetically detailed and emotionally intense choreography, LEVYdance is “thoughtful, provocative...profoundly interesting,” says the Washington Post. Performing for the first time in Vancouver, the company presents three short works from its repertoire, including if this small space, Falling after Too and Physics.
“Bell has a lot working in her favour: powerful, daredevil dancers and an almost garish imagination capable of dreaming up surreal scenarios…a slick, in-your-face intensity dominates her onstage worlds.” (The New York Times)
“LEVYdance has the appeal of youth: fresh-faced, chiselled dancers with the urban cool of club kids, sexiness infused with smarts and a young choreographer, Benjamin Levy, worth getting excited about.” (The San Francisco Chronicle)
