2013 Chutzpah! Festival presents Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company - If at All + Barak Marshall duet opening - Zion

2013 Chutzpah! Presents : Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company – If at All
Barak Marshall duet opening – Zion
February 20, 21, 23, 24
Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday @ 8pm
Sunday February 24 @ 2pm
POST SHOW TALKBACK – Saturday February 23

Back after highly successful shows at 2011 Chutzpah! in their North American premiere of If at All The Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company (KCDC), one of Israel's most prominent dance companies, is widely identified with the works of Artistic Director Rami Be’er whose exclusive and unique choreographic character, has become the company’s trademark both in Israel and abroad. With its technically strong and physically eclectic dancers, and dynamic sensibility, KCDC characterizes Israeli dance performing in theatres and festivals around the world. “Be'er achieves his dramatic purpose through choreographed free association...The committed performance of the cast and the purity of the choreography will win you over." (New York Times) “The K.C.D.C.’s dancers excel themselves, they give their soul, and the excitement overwhelms the audience…” (Tikva Hoter Ishai, Yediot Ahronot)

The North American premiere of If at All promises a moving theatrical work of distinct, contrasting pieces that deal with powerful philosophical and political struggles such as humanity’s indifference to issues of social justice and the barriers that inhibit individual freedoms. Also on the program is the not-to-be-missed return of Israeli American choreographer Barak Marshall, whose work had its Canadian premiere last year at Chutzpah! This year he returns for a Festival Creative Residency where he will share his international experience with the local dance community. Opening the evening is a remount of his gorgeous duet Zion, originally choreographed for Batsheva Ensemble, and performed by Vancouver’s own James Gnam and Rebecca Margolick. “Barak Marshall is a true auteur, a fully-fledged choreographer, with a powerful style and a unique voice. His work is muscular, original, fevered, carried by excellent dancers, and by an internal force and an intelligence that infuse it with eloquence that is at times arresting.” (Le Nouvel Observateur)
