Chutzpah! 2014 presents Donald Sales/Project 20 & Ate9 Dance Company

A DANCE DOUBLE BILL - World Premiere & Canadian Premieres

Donald Sales, the Artistic Director of the Vancouver-based dance company Project 20 Arts Collective, presents the World Premiere of a new full-length work gR33N to music by Owen Belton and Sales himself.  The word green itself carries meanings such as Envy, Youth, Wealth and Illness which the choreography elaborates on in a fun, mysterious, raw fashion with each dancer carrying the weight of one or more of these four burdens. Performed by Rebecca Margolick, Katie Cassady, Sarah Brinson and Donald Sales, gR33N builds upon the memories and emotional states that the dancers themselves have uncoiled in the back of their subconscious to manifest into a dance.

Adult $33.65
($28 + $1.40 GST + $4.25 s/c)
Senior  $29.45
($24 + $1.20 GST + $4.25 s/c)

Student $24.75
($20 + $1 GST + $3.75 s/c)

As both a professional dancer, and audience favorite, for more than a decade with Ballet BC and other companies such as Aszure Barton & Artists and Dance Theatre of Harlem, and as co-producer of the hit songs Dangerous by Akon and Kardinal Offishall, and Crush by Frankie J, Sales has this to say about his work,

“‘heart’ and 'soul' is a driving force for me. I aim to touch the soul of artists I work with and audience members through collective experiences, memories, music, text, gesture, exploring narrative ideas to take us all on a journey.”

Sales was chosen for the 2013 Clifford E. Lee Award in choreography and premiered another enthusiastically received, full-length work Leaving Grit with co-creator Cherice Barton for the 2012 Chutzpah! Festival.

“Donald Sale’s gR33N, an excerpt from a full-length work that premieres next year at the Chutzpah! Festival, stands out from the pack. To Owen Belton’s score of strings and cartoon sound effects, charismatic dancers Andrea Pena and Rebecca Margolick find a new idiomatic language….that could only have come out of Sale’s witty head”  The Georgia Straight (Feb. 2013)

Israeli-born Danielle Agami introduces her L.A.-based Ate 9 dANCEcOMPANY of nine dancers to Chutzpah!. Mouth to Mouth showcases the virtuosity, versatility and dramatic luster needed to execute Agami’s athletic and expressively  linked movement style.

Agami who danced with the world renowned Batsheva Dance Company for ten years also travels the U.S. as an ambassador of Batsheva Artistic Director Ohad Naharin’s, choreography and Gaga, the unique movement technique Naharin developed. Agami uses her past experiences dancing throughout the world to begin a new journey based on exploring Gaga technique and continuing to grow and share her art.

Ate9 dANCEcOMPANY is a company of hand-picked dancers who, together with Agami, draw on all forms of dance and movement, including improvisation and instinctive motion. Recently Agami has created work for Batsheva Ensemble (Israel) North West Dance Project (Portland), Bark Ballet(Los Angeles) and a unique collaboration with L.A Dance Project for Invisible Cities by The Industry

“The 11 dancers...surged and retreated through line dances, group sections, duets and solos, each with an edgy ferocity. Serious and committed, Ate9 demanded to be watched.”  Los Angeles Times
